Trip to World Trade Center Ground Zero - January 12th, 2002

- We were met at the Port Authority Police Department's Command
Center by a very skilled and kind escort who showed us around
for the day:

- He showed us a memorial for the fallen PAPD officers
with items recovered from the rubble
and items that had been sent by people from around the country:

- There were lots of spirited items sent by kids:

- Next, we visited a memorial for all the NYC rescue
workers who died on 9/11, and we left 4 wreaths:

- We also visited a civilian memorial across the
street:

- We were escorted to Ground Zero to a family viewing
area:

- Inside was a 2 wall memorial to all the victims:

- Ground zero itself was a 4-story deep pit from which
a constant stream of heavy machinery removed debris.
Surrounding buildings showed obvious signs of damage.
